Calabar-CarnivalCarnivals are one of the top tourism magnets all over the world, no matter how far flung or near their locations are. From long haul flights to stopovers at different airports, carnival enthusiasts remain undaunted in their desire to quench this thirst. Calabar Carnival is no different as one couple (The Sampsons) decided to do it differently this year, bypassing the comfort of a 6-hour flight from South Africa to Nigeria for a 6-month drive in the quest to savour the thrill of Calabar Carnival. The Sampsons talk to Omolola Itayemi while enjoying the carnival

From a modest beginning in 2005, the Calabar Carnival, reputed to be the biggest street party in Africa today, has become an annual fiesta steadily transforming into a continental and global showpiece with hundreds of thousands in attendance every year. Little wonder, it served as the fulcrum of Mr and Mrs Mark Sampson with their children's (Rubi and Zola) 6-month journey by road to Nigeria. Very daring and not exactly an option people will opt for.

Top five reasons to visit South Africa

Written by

Big 5_animals_South_AfricaThere is no denying visitors to South Africa will have a checklist which includes getting up close to the "Big Five": lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. With about 700 national parks and game reserves in the country, there's plenty from which to choose. But the most popular is the Kruger National Park, an 800,000sq km area home to 147 species of mammal and more than 500 types of birds. But South Africa is about more than just the Big Five. Off the Western Cape, marine life is abundant. You can cage dive with sharks, see dolphins, seals, humpback whales, crocodiles and even nesting turtles at different times of the year.

Sexy Mandela film hailed

Written by

MandelaAlready being tipped for an Oscar, the film strikes new ground by presenting a sensual side to Mandela, complete with a bedroom scene and a shirt-ripping incident.

It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday as the 95-year-old continues to battle with a lung infection. He was discharged from hospital last week.

For Mandela's family, it is an appropriate time at which to look back at how he shepherded South Africa out of the dark days of apartheid to freedom.

Kweku Mandela, one of his grandsons, said he had seen extracts from the film and thought producer Anant Singh had a "tough job" to adapt the 751-page book but had done it well.
