Top five reasons to visit South Africa

Written by

Big 5_animals_South_AfricaThere is no denying visitors to South Africa will have a checklist which includes getting up close to the "Big Five": lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. With about 700 national parks and game reserves in the country, there's plenty from which to choose. But the most popular is the Kruger National Park, an 800,000sq km area home to 147 species of mammal and more than 500 types of birds. But South Africa is about more than just the Big Five. Off the Western Cape, marine life is abundant. You can cage dive with sharks, see dolphins, seals, humpback whales, crocodiles and even nesting turtles at different times of the year.

Sexy Mandela film hailed

Written by

MandelaAlready being tipped for an Oscar, the film strikes new ground by presenting a sensual side to Mandela, complete with a bedroom scene and a shirt-ripping incident.

It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday as the 95-year-old continues to battle with a lung infection. He was discharged from hospital last week.

For Mandela's family, it is an appropriate time at which to look back at how he shepherded South Africa out of the dark days of apartheid to freedom.

Kweku Mandela, one of his grandsons, said he had seen extracts from the film and thought producer Anant Singh had a "tough job" to adapt the 751-page book but had done it well.

'The Butler' Tops Box Office with $25m

Written by

The Butler_Robin_Williams_Forest_WhitakerThis weekend at the box office, a superhero comedy, a Steve Jobs biopic, and a Harrison Ford thriller all got served by a butler. "Lee Daniels' The Butler," to be exact.

The Weinstein Company's awards-bait drama, which stars Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, topped the chart with an excellent $25 million from 2,933 theatres in its first frame. Audiences issued the well-reviewed picture an enthusiastic "A" CinemaScore grade, which sets it up for a lucrative box office run as summer draws to a close.

"The Butler" opened in the same range as "The Help," which found $26 million in its first weekend in August 2011. Like that film, "The Butler" tells a racially charged story that is playing particularly well with older women.
