KANO (Nigeria) Boko Haram fighters killed several people and destroyed dozens of homes in a raid on a town in northeast Nigeria's Borno state, local residents, a vigilante and the military said on Sunday.
Scores of Islamist militants in trucks and on motorcycles stormed the town of Gubio, 95 kilometres (60 miles) by road north of the state capital, Maiduguri, on Saturday night.
All South African schoolgoers will have to learn the African Union anthem, President Jacob Zuma announced at the Africa Day celebrations on Sunday.
“Starting today every school, church or community, choirs and individuals must practice the African Union anthem, so that we can sing [it] at all our important gatherings and celebrations,” Zuma told the crowd at the Africa Day celebrations, which took place at the University of Pretoria’s Mamelodi campus.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador James Entwistle, congratulated the beneficiaries on their selection.
Spokesman Sgt Mmako Mophiring said the violence started after a section of the community held a meeting on Monday in Mamafubedu township. It was not clear what the meeting was about.
“Let me say on behalf of the people of Kenya that our doors are open to you. We welcome any African who comes to visit us to work and learn as long as they are happy to obey our laws,” he said.
The Nigerian police in the eastern state of Anambra on Sunday debunked media report that a certain restaurant in Awka, the state capital, has been dishing human flesh to unsuspecting members of the public in its menu.
According to the report, the police, had on discovery of the restaurant, closed down the place.
