The 37-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United striker, who scored a record 32 goals for South Africa and won a Uefa Champions League gold medal with FC Porto in 2004, confirmed the news on his Twitter account on Tuesday.
McCarthy, who is in the process of completing his UEFA A licence, was unveiled alongside the club’s new head coach Chris O’Loughlin on Tuesday.
McCarthy played for Orlando Pirates before retiring from all football in 2013.
